Business PC Will Not Start? Protect the Work Files First
When a business PC fails, the urgent problem may be an invoice, an order list or a job file rather than the computer itself. A useful first step is to identify what work has stopped and which files or applications are needed to resume it.
Separate today's work from the repair
Write down the task that cannot wait, the software involved and where its data is normally saved. Another authorised employee may already have access to a current copy on a shared drive or cloud service. Check that copy before deciding the failed computer must be repaired first.
Do not assume that a shared folder or cloud account contains everything. Some desktop applications keep their database, templates or settings locally. Confirm the version and completeness of any available copy.
Tell the technician what must be preserved
- The business application and the work it supports.
- Which files or records are most urgent.
- The last known successful backup.
- What the computer does when you try to start it.
- Any existing IT provider or software supplier who should be involved.
Do not send customer records, passwords or recovery keys in an initial enquiry. A description of the application and problem is enough to start the conversation.
A replacement PC may need more than copied documents
Staff may need software licences, printer settings, shared folders and access permissions restored as well. Agree what a usable replacement looks like: for example, opening the required job file, printing a document and accessing the correct shared folder.
After recovery, make the next failure easier to handle
Record who manages the devices and accounts, what is backed up and how to restore it. If orders are tracked across several isolated spreadsheets, consider whether a shared workflow would help staff continue when one workstation is unavailable.
