Identify a GNOME Shell Extension Before Comparing a Changed Desktop Behaviour

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

GNOME Shell extensions can change the panel, application launching and window management. When one of those behaviours changes after customisation, identify the extension before removing settings or resetting the whole desktop. A controlled comparison can establish which customisation needs attention.

Record the extension identity

Note the visible symptom and one action that reproduces it, such as opening the overview or switching between two windows. Save current work and record the GNOME version, the extension's displayed name and when the behaviour changed.

GNOME identifies each extension by a UUID. Similar display names can refer to different extensions, so retain that identifier when reporting a problem. The documentation describes Looking Glass, opened with Alt+F2 and lg, as a way to inspect installed extensions. Managed desktops may restrict such tools; use the organisation's support route if access is unavailable.

An extension can be installed for one user or for the whole machine. That scope matters when another account behaves differently. Do not delete a system extension folder merely because the current user does not recognise its name.

Compare one change at a time

Use GNOME's Extensions application, when available, to inspect and disable the relevant optional extension. Record its original state first. Repeat the same harmless desktop action and note what changed. If several optional extensions are involved, adjust one at a time so the result remains interpretable.

Disabling a customisation can deliberately remove its panel button or shortcut. Judge the original fault separately from that expected loss of its features. If the comparison does not implicate it, restore the prior state before testing another cause.

When the issue follows the extension, provide the UUID, GNOME version and reproduction to its maintainer. Check the supported update path before re-enabling it; do not force compatibility checks off simply to make an old extension load. Verify the normal desktop action after any update, keeping necessary workplace customisations under their owner's control.
