Gaming PC Graphics Power Path: Overcurrent protection trip | Auckland
Pattern to record: Fans twitch or the PC turns off instantly with one load connected.
Identify the supply and load
Inspect the graphics card’s power path from the specified PSU cable to the GPU socket. The dedicated GPU connector carries its own power feed; PSU standby and power-good signals belong elsewhere in the system. One possible explanation is that the supply detects excessive current and shuts down to protect itself.
Mains and connector safety
Stop immediately if a GPU power plug is discoloured, loose or hot. Repeatedly defeating protection can burn connectors and board traces.
Workshop checks
- Inspect connector seating and temperature and log power behaviour during a controlled graphics test.
- Isolate loads and compare rail resistance before substituting a known supply.
Repair and loaded verification
If the checks support this cause, repair the shorted component or replace the supply if protection is faulty. Verification should cover desktop video, sustained graphics load, combined load, restart and connector temperature.
