Gaming PC Graphics Power Path: Overheated power connector | Auckland
Pattern to record: Plastic is browned or the plug becomes hot during workload.
Mains and connector safety
Stop using the PC if a GPU power plug is browned, loose or abnormally hot. Shut down and disconnect mains power if safe; do not handle the hot connector or run another graphics test to reproduce the heat. Do not open the PSU enclosure.
Identify the supply and load
Inspect the graphics card’s power path from the specified PSU cable to the GPU socket. The dedicated GPU connector carries its own power feed; PSU standby and power-good signals belong elsewhere in the system. One possible explanation is that poor contact has created local resistance at a high-current plug.
Workshop checks
- With power isolated, a technician should inspect the GPU socket, both cable ends and any adapter for heat damage, poor seating or mechanical strain. Check for shorts before reconnecting a repaired power path.
- Confirm the cable and adapter are approved for the exact PSU and GPU configuration. Check the manufacturer’s insertion and routing requirements without forcing a damaged connector back into service.
Repair and loaded verification
Replace heat-damaged mating parts or assemblies as the model requires and correct the cause of poor contact. A burnt plug must not be reused with a new socket. Powered diagnosis is a professional step only after unpowered checks and any necessary repairs have established that it is safe. Using appropriate test equipment and the correct power supply, a qualified technician can then verify desktop video, sustained graphics load, combined load, restart and connector temperature. Stop the test if abnormal heating returns.
