Desktop SATA Data Path: High-speed signal integrity fault | Auckland
Pattern to record: The device works at a lower mode but records interface errors at normal speed.
Identify the connection
Desktop SATA uses a motherboard data port plus a separate drive power connection. Keep the drive identity and port order recorded, especially in a RAID setup, when comparing a cable or port. One possible explanation is that loss, reflection or interference prevents reliable data transfer at full rate.
Protect the drive
Power down before moving internal SATA cables. Forcing lower speed may hide but does not correct physical damage.
Workshop checks for this path
- Compare a known cable and port and review interface error counters.
- Compare short known connections and error counters with supported link settings.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, repair the connector, board path or cable causing the degraded signal. Verification should cover cold boot, sustained transfer, restart, sleep and error counters.
For an assessment of your desktop computer, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
