Use a Metered Connection When Your PC Uses Limited Mobile Data

by AEPC / AKL East PC 27 Sep 2026

A laptop connected to a phone hotspot sees a Wi-Fi network, even though the internet allowance may come from a limited mobile plan. Windows can treat that connection as metered to reduce some background traffic, but the setting is not a guaranteed cap on all data use.

Before a long session, check the mobile plan's remaining allowance through its normal account tools. Decide which large downloads can wait. Video calls, streaming and deliberate file transfers can still consume substantial data even when background activity is reduced.

Mark the correct connection

While connected to the hotspot, open Settings, Network & internet, Wi-Fi and select the connected network. Turn on Metered connection. Windows also provides a metered option for Ethernet connections when those lead to a limited service.

Read any organisation-controlled setting rather than trying to override it. Microsoft notes that some updates and application syncing can be restricted on metered networks, so a paused download or delayed sync may be expected behaviour rather than a broken connection.

Check important applications individually. If you must upload a time-sensitive file, confirm that the upload finishes and the latest version is visible at its destination. A local Save action does not prove the cloud transfer completed.

Recheck after returning to ordinary internet

When you reconnect to your usual unrestricted network, inspect Windows Update and the sync tools you depend on. Allow deferred work to complete at a suitable time. Keep security updates from being delayed indefinitely simply because the laptop often travels.

Windows has a separate option to download updates over metered connections. Use it deliberately if an update is necessary and the data allowance permits; it can undermine the reduction you expected from metering.

If data use still exceeds expectations, identify the application or activity responsible instead of assuming the metered switch failed. Treat metering as one control in a plan that also includes download choices and awareness of the provider's actual usage record.
