USB Ethernet Adapter: Failed Ethernet magnetics | Auckland
Pattern to record: The controller is detected but no link forms with known network equipment.
Separate the adapter from the network
The adapter depends on two connections: USB to the computer and Ethernet to the switch. Note which one disappears during the fault and test the adapter directly before adding a hub or dock. One possible explanation is that the isolation transformer path is open or degraded.
Link and configuration checks
- Compare USB ports, cable, network load and driver behaviour on another computer.
- Compare differential continuity and controller activity using board references.
Before internal work
Stop using an adapter that overheats or has a damaged cable. Surge damage may also affect the controller and protection parts.
Verify the network path
If the checks support this cause, replace the failed magnetics or integrated jack assembly. Verification should cover supported link speed, sustained transfer, sleep, reconnect and another host.
