Check an Unmounted Encrypted Synology Share After Restart

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

An encrypted Synology shared folder may be unavailable after a restart because it has not been mounted. That is a different observation from a failed storage pool. Begin in DSM with an authorised administrator account and check both the shared folder's state and the storage status before creating a replacement share.

Establish what is missing

Write down the shared folder name and whether DSM lists it as encrypted and unmounted. Compare that with the client symptom: a missing network share, an access error or an empty shortcut. A client-side message alone does not identify the storage problem.

Synology's encrypted-folder guidance points to the Mount on Boot setting in Key Manager when a folder does not mount automatically. It also notes that restored encrypted shared folders can remain unmounted. These details are useful after a planned restart or restore, but they do not establish that every missing share has the same cause.

Use the existing recovery material

If the folder is unmounted, follow the installed DSM version's mounting procedure using the correct encryption key or credential already held by the organisation. Keep that material out of support screenshots, email threads and ordinary maintenance notes. The handover should record where the authorised custodian can obtain it, not reproduce the secret.

A Key Manager configuration change is not a substitute for an unavailable folder-encryption key. If the required material cannot be found, stop and establish what was saved during setup. Do not assume that resetting a management setting will decrypt the folder or recover a forgotten encryption secret.

After a successful mount, test access with the intended ordinary user and open a known document. This checks both the mounted data and the user's permissions. Decide separately whether automatic mounting suits the organisation's security and restart requirements. Record that decision with the maintenance procedure, then verify a future planned restart under supervision rather than treating a one-time manual mount as proof of automatic recovery.
