Standard Laptop Hinge Assembly: Hinge alignment error | Auckland
Pattern to record: The lid is square when open but shifted or rubbing when closed.
Locate the moving or damaged part
Watch where movement begins: at the pivot, at its attachment to the lid, or at the base mounting posts. A free-moving hinge attached to broken plastic requires a different repair from a seized pivot in sound mounts. One possible explanation is that the left and right sides were tightened in conflicting positions.
Support the assembly
Stop moving a lid that is lifting the bezel or base because each cycle can enlarge the damage. Forcing the lid shut can crack the panel edge.
Mechanical inspection
- Compare left and right movement, inspect mounting points and check cable routing before cycling the lid again.
- Loosen only with full support, establish neutral alignment and inspect for pre-existing deformation.
Fit and movement after repair
If the checks support this cause, realign the assembly in the correct sequence and replace distorted parts. Verification should cover smooth full travel, closed alignment, cable clearance, webcam, Wi-Fi and sleep switching.
