Record a PowerShell Support Session and Check the Transcript Before Sharing

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

A support transcript is useful when it preserves the command, its result and the context of the attempt. Start it deliberately before the relevant diagnostic work, and keep its destination private because command lines and output can contain sensitive information.

In PowerShell 7 on Windows, choose an existing folder you control and a new filename. Replace this example path with that location:

Start-Transcript -Path 'C:\SupportNotes\session-01.txt' -NoClobber -IncludeInvocationHeader

Microsoft documents NoClobber as preventing replacement of an existing file; without it, an existing transcript path can be overwritten. IncludeInvocationHeader records command invocation timestamps. Check the start message and output path before continuing.

Keep the recording interval deliberate

Run only the approved diagnostic commands needed for the question. Do not type passwords, tokens or private customer material into command arguments while expecting the transcript to hide them.

When the attempt and its output are complete, stop the transcript explicitly:

Stop-Transcript

The command stops the recording started by Start-Transcript and reports its output location. This is a record of a PowerShell session, not a recording of every action in unrelated desktop applications.

Read the actual saved file

Open the transcript in a text editor. Confirm that it contains the intended command, the relevant error or result, and the end of the attempt. Keep an interrupted or failed command labelled accurately; the existence of a log is not evidence that the operation succeeded.

Microsoft documents a subtle limitation: objects emitted by a script can be formatted after transcription has already stopped, leaving that visible output out of the transcript. If a required result is missing, preserve it separately or revise the logging workflow with the script author rather than claiming the log is complete.

Review a sharing copy for secrets, account names and private paths. Keep replacements consistent where context matters, and state that the copy was redacted. Preserve the protected original if it is needed for authorised analysis.

Finish with a short description of the problem and the transcript's time interval. That gives the recipient a bounded record they can interpret instead of an unexplained text attachment.
