Export a PowerPoint Video With Deliberate Slide Timings

by AEPC / AKL East PC 27 Sep 2026

A presentation that works with a live speaker can be difficult to follow as an unattended video. A short title may need little time, while a diagram may require a much longer pause. Decide how viewers should move through the information before exporting.

This guide covers desktop PowerPoint for Windows. Save the editable presentation first and keep it as the source for later revisions. A rendered video is a separate deliverable with its own timing and playback checks.

Choose which timing instructions the export uses

Open File, Export, Create a Video. Select a quality appropriate for the intended display, then inspect whether the export will use recorded timings and narrations. If you choose not to use recorded timings, set the seconds spent on each slide; Microsoft’s documented default is five seconds.

For a deck with mixed reading demands, review or record timings deliberately rather than accepting a uniform interval without checking it. Make sure the export choice matches the timing work you actually completed.

Create the video, select its filename and format, and wait for PowerPoint’s creation progress to finish. Microsoft documents MP4 and WMV output for the Windows workflow.

Watch the exported file independently

Open the resulting video in the player the recipient will use. Start with a slide transition, a dense explanation and any slide containing important audio or video. Then review the complete running order before release.

Check that text remains legible, narration is understandable and the viewer has enough time to read each important point. Compare the final duration with your planned viewing time; a surprisingly short or long result is a reason to inspect timings again.

If a section needs adjustment, change the editable deck or recording and export a new video. Keep the approved version clearly named and remove ambiguous draft copies from the delivery folder. Send the video only after checking the file itself, since a successful slideshow rehearsal does not verify the exported result.
