PC Won’t Turn On? Safe First Checks Before Repair in Auckland

by DIYAN 11 Nov 2025

A computer that will not start can interrupt schoolwork, home life or a business day. Before replacing parts, describe what happens when you press the power switch. That observation helps distinguish a power problem from a display or startup problem.

1. Notice which kind of failure you have

  • No power: no obvious lights, fan activity or response.
  • Power but no picture: the computer responds, but the monitor stays blank.
  • Startup stops: a logo, error or recovery screen appears, but the operating system does not load.

These are starting points for diagnosis, not proof that a particular component has failed. Dell also separates no power, failed startup checks, no boot and no video in its official troubleshooting guide.

2. Keep the first checks simple

Check that the wall socket and powerboard are switched on and that accessible power connectors are properly seated. For a separate monitor, check its power and selected input. Note any charging light, beep pattern or displayed error. Use a charger specified as compatible with the device; a plug that fits is not enough to establish compatibility.

If the computer is off, disconnect nonessential external accessories before one further startup attempt. Avoid repeated attempts if it keeps shutting down or the storage makes unusual sounds. Model-specific reset procedures vary, so follow the manufacturer's instructions for the exact device.

3. Stop when there are signs of damage

Do not keep powering or charging a device after a liquid spill, with a swollen battery, a damaged mains cable or a burning smell. Do not open a desktop power supply or charger. Arrange an assessment instead.

4. Tell the repairer about your files

If the computer holds the only copy of important work, say so before a reinstall or storage replacement. Getting the computer running and recovering files are separate tasks. A no-power fault does not establish whether the storage is healthy or whether its data can be recovered.

What to send us

  • Computer make and model.
  • What happens when power is pressed.
  • Any recent move, update, spill or hardware change.
  • Whether your important files are backed up.
