Calculate a Numbers Working-Day Target With an Explicit Holiday List

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

A planning target described as three working days after a start date needs an agreed calendar. Simply adding three counts calendar days and can land on a weekend or closure. Establish which dates the plan excludes before entering a formula.

Use a disposable Numbers table and an explicitly fictional example. Let the start be Friday 2 October 2026, and let Monday 5 October be a chosen organisational closure. This does not assert that the Monday is a public holiday; it is a date excluded for this example.

WORKDAY(date, work-days, exclude-dates) returns a date the specified number of working days before or after the starting date. It excludes weekends and the optional collection of additional dates. Positive work-days move forward and negative values move backward.

Build dates without an ambiguous numeric date string

Put =DATE(2026,10,2) in A2 and =DATE(2026,10,5) in B2. DATE takes year, month and day as separate arguments. In another cell, enter =WORKDAY(A2,3,B2). Display the result with enough detail to confirm the day, month and year.

The expected target is Thursday 8 October 2026. After Friday, skip the weekend and the stated Monday closure; Tuesday is working day one, Wednesday day two and Thursday day three. Without the additional closure, the corresponding three-day target is Wednesday 7 October.

Compare the formula’s result with that written sequence. This identifies whether the exclusion cell was actually used and whether the start date was interpreted correctly. Keep the closure label beside its date so another reader can understand why the target moved.

Maintain the calendar as an input

For a real plan, obtain the approved exclusion list and keep it current. Do not assume the function retrieves local public holidays, knows a particular workplace’s closure policy or represents a nonstandard roster merely because it accepts a date range.

Include each intended closure in the formula’s referenced collection and inspect the range after adding dates. Check a short example near a weekend and one near a closure before relying on a longer planning interval.

Keep the start date, working-day count and exclusion list visible with the result. If the organisation changes its calendar, recalculate and review affected targets. The output is a planning calculation based on declared inputs, not an independent guarantee of service completion or a legal deadline determination.
