macOS APFS Container: Permission metadata fault | Auckland
Pattern to record: Files are present but access is denied after migration or restore.
Identify the storage layer
APFS separates the physical device, container and individual volumes. Record which layer fails to appear or mount, and protect required files before changing container metadata or removing snapshots. One possible explanation is that ownership or access-control records no longer match intended users.
Protect data before repair
A reinstall or erase is not a data-recovery first step. Blanket permission changes can expose private files or break applications.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Protect the physical drive and inspect container, volume and snapshot structure before repair.
- Confirm encryption, ownership and account identity before changing permissions.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, repair authorised ownership and ACL records without opening unrelated data. Verification should cover mounting, startup, snapshots, file access, sleep and verified backup.
