macOS APFS Container: APFS will not mount after power loss
Pattern to record: The Mac enters recovery or an APFS volume fails to mount after an interrupted operation.
Identify the storage layer
APFS separates the physical device, container and individual volumes. Record which layer fails to appear or mount, and protect required files before changing container metadata or removing snapshots. APFS uses copy-on-write metadata; an unmountable container after a crash should not be described as an NTFS-style journal-replay task.
Protect data before repair
Erasing or reinstalling macOS is not the first step when the only copy of needed data remains on the disk.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Protect the physical drive and inspect container, volume and snapshot structure before repair.
- Protect required data, check physical storage health and inspect the APFS container and volume with a compatible tool.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, repair only the APFS structure identified as damaged, or recover files from an image to another device. Verification should cover mounting, startup, snapshots, file access, sleep and verified backup.
