Prepare a Host Mac for Firmware Revival Before Agreeing to an Erase

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

Firmware recovery involves two computers and two very different actions. Before connecting anything, identify the affected Mac, the helper Mac and the data that must survive. A black screen alone is insufficient evidence that firmware recovery is the correct next step.

Apple’s procedure applies to affected Macs with Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip. The helper, or host, can be any Mac running macOS 14 or later, with internet access and sufficient free storage. Confirm those requirements before arranging a recovery session.

Prepare the connection deliberately

Use a USB-C to USB-C cable supporting both data and charging; Apple specifically says not to use a Thunderbolt 3 cable. Connect directly between the computers. Identify the affected model’s designated DFU port using Apple’s linked port guide, rather than choosing whichever socket is nearest.

Follow the official laptop or desktop preparation sequence for that model, including its power connections and timing. The host Finder should show the affected Mac in DFU mode. The affected Mac’s blank display is expected in that mode, so read the host’s status.

Before the session, record whether a usable backup exists and what it contains. If unique files are the priority, communicate that before anyone selects an action. Having a cable connected does not settle whether losing those files is acceptable.

Keep revive and restore separate

Apple directs users to try Revive first; it does not erase the Mac. Restore erases it and returns it to factory settings. A failed revive therefore requires another data decision, not an automatic click on the next available button.

If the Mac starts after revival, check the expected account and several important files, then update the backup. Preserve any error message if startup still fails. Do not report successful data recovery merely because Finder’s progress bar completed.

Keep a short record of the affected model, host macOS, cable, action selected and resulting screen. This gives the next technician useful evidence while avoiding guesses about whether a previous attempt already erased the computer.
