Laptop Ethernet Interface: Failed Ethernet magnetics | Auckland
Pattern to record: The controller is detected but no link forms with known network equipment.
Separate the adapter from the network
Distinguish a built-in laptop Ethernet port from a USB adapter or dock. Record which adapter appears in the operating system and whether physical link remains up when network access fails. One possible explanation is that the isolation transformer path is open or degraded.
Link and configuration checks
- Compare cable, switch port, firmware detection and sustained transfer before opening the computer.
- Compare differential continuity and controller activity using board references.
Before internal work
Disconnect damaged network cables and docks before internal work. Surge damage may also affect the controller and protection parts.
Verify the network path
If the checks support this cause, replace the failed magnetics or integrated jack assembly. Verification should cover link at supported speed, local transfer, internet access, sleep and undocking.
