Check Two Different Isolation Settings Before Offering Guest Wi-Fi

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

A network named Guest is not evidence of a particular access boundary. Before giving visitors its password, identify whether the intended rule is internet-only access, separation from other visitors, or access to one deliberately shared resource. These are different requirements.

Read both access directions

TP-Link's wireless-router guidance describes separate options for allowing guests to see one another and allowing guests to access the local network. The first concerns clients on the guest network. The second concerns devices on the main network or wired LAN. Inspect both settings on the exact router model.

Record its operating mode as well. TP-Link warns that access-point mode on some wireless routers does not preserve the same guest separation. Do not transfer that rule blindly to every Deco or business access point; check the manual and firmware-specific controls for the equipment actually installed.

Test the intended boundary with permission

Use a device you own or are authorised to test. Connect it to the guest network and confirm ordinary internet access. Then test a harmless, known service on an authorised main-network test device whose address and availability you have already confirmed from the main network.

If guest-to-guest separation is required, repeat the appropriate check between two authorised guest test devices. Record the service tested and result. A failed ping alone is inconclusive because a device can decline ping while other services remain reachable.

If the boundary does not match the requirement, keep business resources protected and have the network administrator review the design. Giving everyone the main Wi-Fi password is not a useful workaround for a visitor-printing request. That request may need a specifically controlled sharing arrangement.

Keep a short record of the router model, mode, relevant settings and test date. Recheck after changing the network architecture. The useful result is demonstrated access behaviour, not simply a second network name appearing on a phone.
