Identify a Locked GNOME Keyring Before Resetting Stored Passwords

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

Logging into the desktop and unlocking a GNOME password keyring are different events. If an application asks to unlock a keyring, identify the named collection before deleting files or resetting stored credentials. A working desktop login does not demonstrate that the keyring password is the same.

Select the correct collection

Open Passwords and Keys, the GNOME application also known as Seahorse. Under Passwords, locate the keyring named in the prompt. Note whether its lock icon indicates it is locked. Several collections can exist, so do not assume that the first entry is the one the application requested.

GNOME documents unlocking through the lock icon or the keyring's Unlock action. Enter the current password for that keyring. Keep this step local; a support ticket needs the collection name and result, not the password or a screenshot of its stored secrets.

If the known password succeeds, retry the application action that caused the prompt. This checks that the intended application can access the intended collection. Merely dismissing the prompt does not establish that its saved credentials were available.

Change a password only when you can authenticate

For a keyring whose current password you know, Passwords and Keys offers Change Password from the collection's context menu. It first asks for the existing keyring password, then the new password and confirmation. Record which collection you changed in your own maintenance notes.

Do not treat this procedure as recovery for an unknown password. Guessing repeatedly, removing keyring files or creating a blank replacement can leave applications without previously stored credentials. First establish which accounts would need to be signed in again and whether their recovery methods are available.

After an intended change, test unlocking that same collection and accessing one expected saved credential through its normal application. The useful result is a verified keyring access path; it is not a promise that every login, browser password store or remote account password changed together.
