Gaming Laptop High-Power DC Input: Failed reverse-polarity protection | Auckland
Pattern to record: The adapter is recognised mechanically but no protected voltage appears beyond the input stage.
Identify the input design
A gaming laptop may run normally at the desktop yet exceed the available adapter power during a combined CPU and GPU workload. Record the original adapter model and whether the failure occurs while gaming, charging, or both. One possible explanation is that the input MOSFET or protection stage no longer passes valid adapter power.
Stop before further damage
Do not continue a graphics load when the plug, jack or cable is overheating. Guessing at MOSFET orientation can expose the board to full adapter current.
Workshop checks
- Use the correct wattage adapter, monitor input stability under a controlled load and inspect the jack and cable for heat damage.
- Compare gate, source and drain conditions using the correct circuit reference.
Repair and power verification
If the checks support this cause, replace the failed protection device after confirming no secondary short remains. Verification should cover idle charging, combined processor and graphics load, connector temperature and restart.
For an assessment of your gaming laptop, contact AEPC in Burswood or call 027 908 8880. Provide the model and the conditions that reproduce this problem. Workshop visits are by appointment.
