External exFAT Storage Volume: Repair warning after an interrupted write
Pattern to record: A repair warning first appears after a power loss during a write.
Identify the storage layer
Confirm that the external volume is actually exFAT and record which computer or device last wrote to it. Compare the cable and enclosure as well as the volume; a shared drive may encounter different host policies on Windows and macOS. exFAT has no file-system journal to replay; an interrupted operation can instead leave directory or allocation metadata inconsistent.
Protect data before repair
Cancel format prompts until required files are secured. Do not run a journal-replay procedure intended for NTFS or another file system.
Evidence to check on the protected copy
- Test the device and connection read-only before deciding whether the issue is media or file-system damage.
- Secure readable files or an image, then examine exFAT metadata with a tool that supports the format.
Recovery and verification
If the checks support this cause, repair confirmed metadata inconsistencies on a protected copy or recover files to another device. Verification should cover cross-platform mounting, large file transfer, safe removal and backup.
