Desktop Motherboard M.2 Slot: High-speed signal integrity fault | Auckland
Pattern to record: The device works at a lower mode but records interface errors at normal speed.
Identify the connection
Read the motherboard’s slot table before moving an M.2 drive. Slots can differ in SATA/NVMe support, length and shared lanes, so a working drive in one socket need not work in every socket. One possible explanation is that loss, reflection or interference prevents reliable data transfer at full rate.
Protect the drive
Do not force an M.2 module into an incompatible keyed slot. Forcing lower speed may hide but does not correct physical damage.
Workshop checks for this path
- Check board lane-sharing rules, drive keying and firmware configuration.
- Compare short known connections and error counters with supported link settings.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, repair the connector, board path or cable causing the degraded signal. Verification should cover all configured slots, cold boot, sustained transfer, restart and temperature.
