Desktop Motherboard M.2 Slot: Worn storage connector contact | Auckland
Pattern to record: Detection changes after gentle reseating or movement.
Identify the connection
Read the motherboard’s slot table before moving an M.2 drive. Slots can differ in SATA/NVMe support, length and shared lanes, so a working drive in one socket need not work in every socket. One possible explanation is that repeated insertion or movement has reduced reliable electrical contact.
Protect the drive
Do not force an M.2 module into an incompatible keyed slot. Repeated live reseating can corrupt data or short power.
Workshop checks for this path
- Check board lane-sharing rules, drive keying and firmware configuration.
- Inspect mating surfaces and compare a known supported device.
Repair and data checks
If the checks support this cause, replace the worn socket, cable or interposer. Verification should cover all configured slots, cold boot, sustained transfer, restart and temperature.
