Convertible Laptop 360-Degree Hinge: Hinge-area cable abrasion | Auckland
Pattern to record: Screen, camera or wireless behaviour changes at repeatable lid angles.
Locate the moving or damaged part
A convertible hinge has a specified rotation range and cable route for laptop, tent and tablet positions. Stop at the first abnormal resistance rather than forcing a full rotation to demonstrate the fault. One possible explanation is that the moving hinge or sharp housing edge has worn through cable insulation.
Support the assembly
Do not force a convertible hinge past a tight point because bonded display damage is costly. Exposed conductors can short panel power into data lines.
Mechanical inspection
- Test movement only within the safe range, inspect rotation stops and compare sensor behaviour with mechanical alignment.
- Disconnect power and inspect the complete flexing section and its protective sleeve.
Fit and movement after repair
If the checks support this cause, replace the damaged cable and correct routing or missing protection. Verification should cover all supported positions, mode sensing, touch, display, cable clearance and sleep.
