Build a Chrome Site-Search Shortcut That Sends Queries to the Intended Service

by AEPC / AKL East PC 28 Sep 2026

A site-search shortcut can reduce repetitive navigation to a trusted support catalogue or knowledge base. Before creating one, check that its normal search uses a stable results-page address. Some applications do not expose a reusable query in the URL, so this method is not universal.

Derive the shortcut from a harmless search

Open the intended service through its trusted address and search for a non-sensitive term. Inspect the resulting address. Google’s instructions use the results-page URL, replacing the actual search term with %s; the site’s home-page address alone is usually not the search template.

Avoid copying account tokens, temporary signed links or confidential query values into a reusable setting. If the URL is complex or its parameters are unclear, use a normal bookmark or ask the service owner for its documented search format.

In Chrome Settings, Search engine, Manage search engines and site search, add a clear label and a distinctive shortcut. Enter the checked template in the URL field. Keep your general default search engine as a separate choice unless changing it is also intended.

Prove that substitution and routing work

Invoke the shortcut from the address bar using Chrome’s displayed prompt and enter a second harmless term. Confirm the results page is on the intended domain and shows the new query, not the original example hard-coded into the address.

Repeat with a phrase containing a space to check ordinary usage. Inspect the address-bar destination before using private company terminology; a mistyped shortcut may leave the text in the default search workflow instead.

If the service changes its search format, edit or deactivate the entry rather than accumulating similar shortcuts. Managed work browsers may control search settings, so coordinate changes with the administrator where required. Keep a brief note of the shortcut and its destination so users can recognise which service receives their search terms.
