Why Changing Chrome’s Home Button Does Not Change Its Startup Tabs

by AEPC / AKL East PC 27 Sep 2026

Chrome has separate controls for the Home button and the pages opened at launch. Changing one can leave the other exactly as it was, making a correct settings change look ineffective. First identify the action that opens the unwanted page.

Match the control to the symptom

If the page appears when you press Home, open Settings, Appearance and the Show Home button options. Choose the intended destination there. Test by opening an ordinary page and pressing Home; this isolates the control you just changed.

If the page appears when Chrome starts, open Settings, On startup. The choices include a New Tab page, continuing the previous session or opening a specific set of pages. Inspect a configured list before editing it. Continuing the previous session can legitimately bring back yesterday’s tabs, even when the Home button points somewhere else.

Restart with saved work

Save forms and other active work before closing the browser for a startup test. Reopen the intended profile and check which pages appear. Record the result separately from the Home-button test so you know whether both behaviours are now correct.

Use current pages cautiously when defining a startup set. Every tab currently open may not belong in your daily launch routine, especially private account pages or temporary research. A short deliberate list is easier to maintain than repeatedly closing unwanted tabs.

If a setting changes back without your action, preserve the page address and timing for investigation. Unexpected software or a browser extension may be involved, while work or school management can legitimately control some settings. Do not treat a managed setting as permission to remove the organisation’s controls.
