ATX Desktop Power Supply: Incorrect modular PSU cable | Auckland
Pattern to record: The system fails immediately after a cable change or a drive is damaged.
Identify the supply and load
An ATX power supply provides several outputs and startup signals. Document the PSU model and connected loads; a spinning fan or a simple unloaded start test does not establish stable operation under load. One possible explanation is that a cable from another supply presents the wrong pin arrangement.
Mains and connector safety
Power supplies contain lethal mains sections and should not be opened casually. Modular cables are not universally interchangeable even when connectors fit.
Workshop checks
- Measure standby and loaded rails with known hardware while separating PSU from board faults.
- Disconnect power and verify continuity against the exact PSU documentation.
Repair and loaded verification
If the checks support this cause, use only the cable set specified for that supply and assess connected parts. Verification should cover cold start, processor and graphics load, sleep, restart and all required connectors.
