Thermal Paste Is Not Always the Answer to Overheating

by AEPC / AKL East PC 18 May 2026

Thermal paste gets a lot of attention because it is easy to name. It can matter, especially on older or heavily used machines. But overheating is not always solved by replacing paste. Dust, blocked vents, worn fans, poor heatsink mounting, case airflow and background load can all be involved.

If a laptop or desktop runs hot, the first step is to understand when it happens. Hot at idle, hot under gaming load, hot while charging and hot after a few minutes of video calls all point to different checks.

Fan behaviour gives clues

A fan that never speeds up may be failing or controlled incorrectly. A fan that runs constantly at full speed may be reacting to blocked airflow or a sensor issue. Scraping or rattling sounds suggest a physical fan problem.

Replacing paste without cleaning the heatsink or checking fan condition can miss the main cause.

Measure before guessing

Temperature readings, dust inspection, fan testing and workload review create a clearer repair path. Some thin laptops naturally run warmer, but sudden changes still deserve attention.

AEPC / AKL East PC checks overheating laptops and desktops in Auckland. Visit our PC repair page or contact us with the device model and symptoms.
